The makers of the Sienna professional broadcast software systems announced a cloud-based NewTek NDI relay service to implement an IP workflow across a Wide Area Network (WAN) for clients that need to transport video between remote locations and collaborate across a distance for content creation. Sienna NDI.Cloud will enable the collaboration by means of a variety of services to the NDI-enabled client sites, including site grouping, site discovery and propagation, bandwidth compression, and UDP (an internet protocol) video transport. The result is that NDI-enabled sites on a wide area network see and access each other as though they are local.
The service is possible because, while operation over a Local Area Network (LAN) is recommended for reliable live production, NewTek NDI can span any distance as long as the appropriate bandwidth is available. Interest in production across WANs using NDI has resulted in a number of recent experiments. One example from Sweden was a 19km round-trip fiber-optic connection between a conference and the studio hosting the conference’s sign-interpreter and handling the live production and streaming of the conference.
Sienna NDI.Cloud’s high-quality compression and WAN-acceleration enhancements make it possible to use the moderate transfer speeds available across most regions of the public internet for NDI transport. So, Sienna’s proof-of-concept was a whopping 14842 km (9222 miles) bi-directional link that connected London to Singapore for live demonstrations by distributor TechTel at the Broadcast Asia 2016 tradeshow:

Video from the phone was instantly visible as a source for the TriCaster; TriCaster outputs were instantly visible as sources in the NDIMonitor application, and the TriCaster was able to return a mix-minus confidence feed to London.
