Dr. Andrew Cross is the chief architect of NDI™. He is also a leading industry visionary when it comes to IP-based production and the transition from traditional broadcast techniques. In this fascinating interview with Ryan Salazar of Broadcast Beat streaming from NABShow Live 2017, Dr. Cross delves into a variety of topics related to NDI, the momentum and current state of the industry transition to IP, and beyond. It is well worth the investment in time for anybody in the industry interested in these topics.
NABShow Live 2017 was powered by a NewTek IP Series Video Mix Engine delivering an incredible multi-source workflow with up to 44 external inputs. A simple network connection was bringing in dozens of sources, as more than forty companies were using NDI to share live and pre-recorded video and graphic content over the show floor local network from their booths. This included a number of sources in UHD 4K|60p.
“It’s like we’ve turned the convention center into an interop test zone, and everybody is using everybody else’s feeds,” Dr. Cross observed.
Salazar notes that the NDI integration announcements from companies from the moment the royalty-free SDK launched indicated explosive growth of NDI adoption, and Dr. Cross confirmed that response has been overwhelming. Taking just the companies he has been able to follow, a new NDI-enabled product has come out about every three days. Dr. Cross noted that he was finding even more at the show, including two just on his way to the interview that morning.
“For me that’s the greatest thing about walking around [NABShow] is that you see companies using your technology you didn’t even know were using it.”
